  • Necessary only when traveling at sublight velocities, due to non-Newtonian nature of warp travel (TOS Novel: Errand of Vengeance: The Edge of the Sword)
    • Still in operation during warp travel, due to potential for high accelerations within warp bubbles or upon sudden unexpected transition back to sublight
