  • Mutually-declared neutral buffer zone between United Federation of Planets and Cardassian Union (TNG: "Journey's End" et al.)
  • Formed 2370 following end of Federation-Cardassian War by mutual agreement (TNG: "Journey's End")
  • All outposts and bases within the Neutral Zone decommissioned
  • Colonies along border of DMZ intended to be transferred to opposing nation
    • Multiple Cardassian colonies transferred to Federation control, and vice versa
      • Resettlement offered to colonists
      • Following Dorvan V incident, some Federation colonies instead ended ties with Federation, allowing themselves to fall under Cardassian jurisdiction
  • All state-sponsored or military vessels of either party banned from transit into or through the Demilitarized Zone
  • Civilian unaligned vessels, or state-sponsored or military vessels of a third party, allowed so long as they are not merely serving as proxy actors
    • All such vessels closely monitored by both powers
  • Almost immediately following establishment, Cardassian Central Command began efforts to secretly arm Cardassian colonists in order to expel Federation colonists from the region (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I")
    • Resulting terrorist attacks against Federation or former Federation citizens led to formation of the Maquis, striking back against both Cardassian attempts to expel them and Starfleet attempts to quell the violence (DS9: "The Maquis")
  • DMZ continued to be a hotbed for both Maquis and Cardassian terrorist strikes over the following years
    • After start of Klingon-Cardassian War, Cardassian forces largely diverted from DMZ, allowing flourishment of Maquis (DS9: "For the Cause")
  • DMZ dissolved July 30, 2373, following admission of Cardassian Union to the Dominion and commencement of Dominion War (DS9: "By Inferno's Light")
